Question: Are there any alternatives to medication for extreme hyperativity? I have an 8 yr old diagnosed w/ ADHD and his medication was just increased . Am concerned about his not gaining adequate weight btu am loath to even try to take him off the medication as he really needs it . Could it be the withdrawls that makes the medication dosage increase. ideas.inputs.comments.
Answer: I have worked with teens who are "diagnosed" with ADD .... in karate classes .... most times, after a few months - there is great improvement in classroom behavior & general life..... in some cases the teen was able to get completely off meds in a year. I strongly believe that martial arts is the way to go - what it offers is a PHYSICAL outlet to begin with & then it teaches the person how to cultivate more and better focus as time goes on. You will not see miricles & it will be difficult - the ADD teens often are asked to step to the side of class until they gain control & if they stick it out - they are usually much the better for it. If you want to try this route - make sure you choose a school with a more "art" focused instructor than a "fight" oriented instructor. I highly suggest Tang Soo Do as the type of martial art to try if there is one in your area.
