Question: This is a very radical conclusion. So I can understand why you might find it a little hard to swallow. Assuming you have nodisagreement with the primary contention of my abstract, i.e., that homo sapiens are becoming too valuatively objective fortheir own good, the contention that they are also becoming too rational falls right out from it by adopting the assumptionthat 'being rational' is more a matter of 'being objective' than of 'maximizing self-interest'.This, in turn, entails a not so implausible implication (IMHO) that the reason we are becoming a bit toorational is because mother nature, being the blind arational that she is, has endowed all of her naturally selected organismswith a conception of their own importance which is RATIONALLYINORDINATE. But then what else would you expect from a blindarational mechancal process, eh? To be honest, I did not read you paper closely, so was unsure ofwhether you really did think "homo sapiens are becoming too rational". Forgive me for missing this, but are you saying that there is adifference between being rational, or being objective, and maximising self interest?
Answer: I am suggesting that rationality is not a strategic attribute, but rather a holistic tool nature has begun toemploy to do her bidding in one particular species. Theirare a number of reasons why I believe this is a logicalmove to make, among them: 1. All strategic theories (e.g., egoism) of rationality can be shown to be self-defeating, in that they can be shown to sanction rational irrationality (e.g., Parfit).2. All strategic theories are riddled with paradoxes, such as Newcomb's Problem and the Prisoner's Dilemma, none of which are a problem for a holistic theory (i.e., one in which 'being rational' = 'being objective' or 'being able to "see" what is going on'.3. There is no reason to assume that, simply because nature has employed rationality to achieve her strategic end (e.g., perpetuating one's DNA via maximizing self- interest), that that end itself is rational.4. A holistic theory is more elegant, in that 'being rational is not a matter of objectivity with respect to beliefs and subjectivity with respect to values, but of objectivity period.5. A holistic theory of rationality is compatible with the findings of Kurt Godel, in his metamathematical proof that rationality can not be reduced to logic, including the strategic logic of natural selection.6. A holistic theory can EXPLAIN why we turned out like Captain Kirk instead of Mr. Spock.7. A holistic theory can explain what morality is (a more rational emotion than prudence).
